Good v Bad Country

In honor of CMA Fest this weekend and Wednesday’s post, we’re gonna take a look at what good country is and what bad country is.

BAD COUNTRY WALLPAPER:

Where are those ducks going in that hat? How did they all find the same hat? Are they part of the Red Hat Society?

Is it just me or does this look like the back of girl’s head that wears pigtails? All I see are pigtails.

BAD COUNTRY DRAPES:

They’re on sale for $71.99 and four have sold. Sweet Lord.

EVEN BETTER COUNTRY DRAPES:

You can be country and like Greek Key details. In my world of country you can. You don’t have to but it’d be best if you were open to it.

I saw an old friend weeks ago at The Color Run.  (Hey Ashley Elizabeth!) She told me that she reads the blog and I asked her what her  style was. The response was “country meets the 1920s.” I’ve never heard that, and I want to know more.

A lot of people are scared of country decor and I can understand why. However, there is such a thing as modern country. Country Living, Southern Living and Better Homes and Gardens provides us with fresh takes on what country decor can be. It’s not all wallpaper borders that have ducks with blue ribbons or puffy valences trimmed in lace.

I was inspired to dig around and see what I could find that may be “country meets the 1920s.” The image below was the best of what I found. There is a great mix going on. The couch is a bright floral, but it’s not “Dusty Rose.” (I dig this couch.) Chinoiserie art flanks an old set of doors. The coffee table is an old trunk but it has a great color and a trim detail.

I’d love to hear or see what your take on “country meets the 1920s” is. Of course, I’m going to invite myself to Ashley Elizabeth’s place.

Do you have any favorite country decor pictures?

Lillys

We left our favorite Mexican restaurant Sunday afternoon and The Mister gently told me that Lilly Pulitzer died. I wasn’t happy. I like a colorful and resourceful lady. (The link is from the New York Times article on her life. I suggest it.)

She became a fashion icon for her tropical, wildly colored shift dresses and the brand was revived in 1993. A home line followed. There as a partnership with Lee Jofa and I kept a couple of the ads because I loved them so.

I love gingham. I like it on the walls in both the photo above and below. However, I probably prefer it on a larger scale.

I will have gingham walls – someday. I’m gonna have to do them myself or hire someone because The Mister says they look complicated.  They do look complicated and that’s the reason they’ve not happened already. But they will.

I’ve had four posts that have featured Lilly Pulitzer’s style and brand: the home collectionLonny’s article and inspirational photos, gingham walls and the color pink. I encourage you to look at photos of her creations, if you need a little pep in your style.

We’re I’m playing a game called “Table Switcheroo.” It involves me changing the tables around our living room/main room of the house’s couch. There have been a few options, but I think I’m sticking with the small round campaign ones.

First, I cleaned off the lucite console and lugged it over.

Too big.

Then, I went decidedly smaller.

We will discuss the awesome lamps later.

We’re sticking with these for awhile.

I like their smaller scale. The room feels lighter. However, they’re half the size of what we used to have there. I’m sticking with them as I believe their scale is fine. Here are some pretty photos that show I’m right – little tables by sofas work.

Brass Menagerie

I recently found a set of brass deer and wanted them. However, I thought the $73 price was not only oddly specific but higher than expected.

The one on the right was around a foot tall. I would enjoy a larger set like below.

I have a small collection of brass animals and I’m always on the look out for them. A little brass menagerie. Jenny from Little Green Notebook featured a DIY of spray painting animal figurines. (read it here) They could be cute in a children’s room on a high shelf. I doubt they could take much usage/touching and would need to be “look not touch.”

Here are some of my brass animals around the house.

I love this piggy.

You’ll see this dresser again next week.

We’re missing photos of two ducks and swan. Obviously I have a brass swan.

I’m trying to come up with ideas on what to do with our television in our living room. My current idea is to surround it with a bookshelf or built in. Here are my inspirational photos.

I like these bookshelves the most.

Of course, I just like this room. Big gold mirror. Clear coffee table. Garden stool. Books everywhere. All of it. However, we couldn’t do a series of bookshelves. We don’t have the space. I just want the one.

tv bookcase

I don’t think that’s too much to ask.

I think The Mister could make it. I don’t want anything fancy and these instructions/directions seem like something we could use.

A few days ago, while doing my grocery shopping at Kroger, I saw this.

20130201-225851.jpg

Insert me stopping mid-aisle and backing up

I was at the Green Hills Kroger so I wasn’t at a Kroger Marketplace. I’ve only been to a Marketplace on the road but know some outlying areas have them. I haven’t seen Kroger sell dishes before and I was real excited about them being Blue Willow. Plus, there sale signs.

20130201-230853.jpg

Here is the only picture of pricing that is readable.

20130204-100958.jpg

After scrutinizing photos, here are the prices I’ve confirmed:

  • Dinner plate $5.24
  • Salad plate $3.75
  • Cereal bowl $3.75
  • Soup bowl $3.75
  • Large serving bowl $14.99
  • 14″ Oval Platter $20.24
  • Covered casserole $44.99

I think a grouping of Blue Willow can be really pretty on a wall.

However, I don’t think it looks great on your back.
