I’m a nerd. So, imagine my excitment when I saw the John James Audubon State Park just 15 minutes from the client I was visiting last week. Of course, I stopped on my way home.
The John James Audubon State Park is in Henderson, Kentucky where John James Audubon studied and painted birds from 1810-1819. Their grounds and cottages are open all year. I missed the Audubon Bicentennial Celebration which was on July 3rd.
This is the building containing the gift shop and museum. I climbed to the top, which is not that high, but let’s pretend that it is.
I was slightly let down that Audubon did not live or set foot in any of the buildings, nor did he live on the park land. However, the museum was nicer than expected and the people were very friendly. The museum opened in 1938 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the Works Project Administration. There is a golf course, boat dock and five cabins that can be rented.
Here is the photo I took to remind myself of their facilities.
This photo reminds me that they have some pavillions (it is a state park) and a statue of a man. It would be a good place for a family reunion, which we don’t have, so I can only assume this.
The museum is only $5.00 and you should go if nearby. Plus, it has a gift shop!
